 David Campbell was born on 8th
January 1961 and spent the first ten years of his life in the Ayrshire
village of Hurlford. Hurlford is about 23 miles south of Glasgow in the
south-west of Scotland. When David was 10, he and his family moved to the
coastal town of Ayr, a few miles to the west of Hurlford. David’s mother still lives there.
While a child, David attended a Christian Brethren Assembly with his family,
first in Hurlford and then in Ayr. By the time he was 19 years old he was
attending the Ayr Baptist Church, where he became involved in leading the
youth work and playing the piano for the youth choir.
Beginning in 1980, David attended Glasgow University. Toward the end of his
degree course there, through reading the biographies of men like Knox,
Calvin, Whitefield, M’Cheyne and Spurgeon, the desire was awakened in
David’s heart to preach the gospel. Sensing a call to the gospel ministry he
began in 1983 a 4 year course at the Free Church of Scotland College in
Edinburgh. The Free Church of Scotland is a Presbyterian denomination,
thoroughly reformed and evangelical.
During the college breaks David had several intern pastorates in one of the
Free Church congregations on the Isle of Skye (north-west of the Scottish
mainland) and one in Geneva Road Evangelical Baptist Church in Darlington, a
town in the northern part of England. After spending the month of September
1986 at the Geneva Road church, David was subsequently called to be their
Pastor and began his ministry there in September 1987.
In a number of important ways the Geneva Road church is very like Grace
Baptist Church. It is fully committed to the doctrines of the 1689 Baptist
Confession, gives central place in its worship to the preaching of God’s
word, and is active in missionary endeavours. David was Pastor of the Geneva
Road Church for 15 years until accepting a call in 2002 to Grace Baptist
Church.
While involved in a Free Church mission in the north-east village of Brora
in 1987, David met his future wife Mairi who was on the same mission team. Mairi is from Kyle of Lochalsh, a village in the north-west of Scotland, and
became a Christian when she was 16 years old.
They got married in July of 1989. Two years later, in July 1991, their first
daughter Megan was born. Their second daughter, Caitriona, was born in
September of 1993.
